Volunteer a little of your time and talent with the Rachel Carson Homestead Association and you will be helping to advance Rachel’s Legacy and Environmental Ethic as well as preserving her childhood home.

The RCHA has a variety of opportunities for individual volunteers and groups to participate- from light landscaping and trail maintenance, outreach events such as the Home & Garden Show in Pittsburgh from February 27 - March 8, and our major programs including Rachel’s Sustainable Feast and Legacy Conference.
Landscaping & Trail
Look after Rachel’s front yard! Ideal for Garden Clubs, work groups or Scouts, the landscaping maintenance and trail work is an on-going task.
Each spring and fall the RCHA hosts a clean-up day. Activities may include mulching flower beds, pruning, pulling weeds and invasive plants or repainting picnic tables. Throughout the spring and summer, the lawn needs to be mowed and there are endless leaves in the fall to rake.
The Sense of Wonder Trail is a 1/4 mile interpretive path where Rachel herself most likely wandered. The Trail can often need to be cleared of overgrowth or fallen trees, pruning, remulching and general oversight.
Outreach Events
Home & Garden Show, Feb. 27 to March 8, Pittsburgh.
Farm to Table, April 3 and 4, Pittsburgh
Venture Outdoors Festival: May 16, Pittsburgh
These events offer the opportunity to engage the public about Rachel and distribute our informational brochures. Many times we will conduct a brief survey to collect additional information about consumer habits and for developing further content.
RCHA Major Events
Rachel’s Sustainable Feast, May 24, Springdale
Join us for this tremendous annual event! We will be seeking volunteers for all aspects of the Feast, including setting up tables, assisting vendors, farmers and chefs, directing individuals, providing tours, monitor refuse, compost and recycling, staffing RCHA information table and ultimately tear-down/clean-up.
Legacy Conference: September 25, Pittsburgh
This annual consortium of industry professionals and educational minds offers an insight of current environmental trends and discussions for solutions. Opportunities abound to assist with check in, directing conference goers, note taking and other logistical support.
